"Project Management"

Course Overview
Have you ever been involved in a complex project that just did not go the way you wanted? Often failure is pre-ordained due to the approach to the project. The concept of project management exists because it helps assure completion of a project successfully. This course covers the basics of project management where our scholars will learn what project management involves and how to approach it successfully.
Classroom Atmosphere:
As a student at AIA, it is expected that you are being provided with education and training for a career in the business world. The classroom atmosphere should reflect the development of habits of behavior that will ultimately contribute to your 
success in the business world. Consequently, the policies established in this course are designed to promote and maintain a business-like atmosphere and to promote an environment conducive to learning. 
 Course Goals
What project management is all about and how to approach  it successfully? The selection of a project manager and defining the goals of the project.  The importance of planning, management, team building, and organization. The issue of budgeting in project management, including cost budgeting and personnel budgeting. The importance of estimating, guessing, and milestones in project scheduling. How leadership and communication  affect project management? How variables and risks should be approached when planning a project?

Attending all classes is expected. In order to thoroughly understand the material and engage in good discussion, it is important to maintain attendance. Thus 5% is award for attendance.

 In-Class Discussion: 
Participation is an essential aspect of business today. A highly interactive  class discussion provides students with the following:

 1.  more  personal, in depth understanding of the concepts,

 2.   experience  applying concepts to real world problems;

 3.   more pleasant classroom experience for both students and 

 To participate, you must contribute to the class experience by reading the material before class. The definition of participation for this course includes: asking  intelligent questions about course material, answering questions, leading
  discussions about assigned cases, and suggestions and/or ideas about current events and issues you may have read about or experienced related to the subject at hand. Participation does not include simply attending class, general
  questions about the course (i.e. exam dates, what will be included on exams, when assignments are due, etc.) The main premise involves the quality of the participation not the quantity of participation. A high level of class participation may result in a BONUS to your final grade.
In Class Assignments: 
Every class will include discussion, but some classes will be designated for wrap up of the previous chapter, case discussion and/or in class assignments. To prepare for discussion of the case, answer questions that are given at the end 
of each class students are expected to read the assigned case(s) and answer the assigned questions, or read the chapter and answer the assigned questions.
   For these questions should be no more than one and a half pages in length (double-spaced and typed) and should demonstrate that the student(s) have thoughtfully considered the issues in the case or thoroughly answered the questions regarding the chapter. All write-ups should be in your own words. If  two identical papers are turned in, each student will receive no credit for the assignment.
Case write-ups or chapter questions should be submitted by Sunday following the date it was issued NO LATER THAN 3:00 p.m. No late assignments will be accepted! If you know you will be missing class ahead of time, you may arrange to turn the assignment in early for full credit. I will not be accepting assignments handwritten (unless they are assigned in class), so please be sure to make arrangements to have your assignment turned in on time.
In class exercises will be done individually or in small groups. These exercises  will take place at the beginning, middle, or end of class (if you come in late, you may miss the exercise for that day.) Each exercise is designed to help students apply course concepts and facilitate a greater depth of the management discipline. Write-ups will be turned in at the end of the exercise. 
Make-up assignments for half credit will be an option for those individuals who inform me ahead of time that they will be missing class. 
In-class assignments and case write-ups will be graded as follows:  

Full credit: Complete, thoughtful answer.  
Half  credit: Incomplete assignment, sloppy assignment or assignment looks like it was scribbled off without thoughtful consideration.
Late assignment: No credit on assignments not turned in or failure to turn in assignment within the allotted time period.
Key points about assignments: More assignments will be given than will be counted toward the final grade. This is an opportunity for those who may be looking for bonus points or replace missed assignments to receive points. In particular, if 
you are uncomfortable with in class participation, this is a great opportunity to receive bonus points to make up the difference.
Group Project: 
Groups consisting of a maximum of 5 students will be formed by the instructor at the beginning of the semester. Each group will be involved in one project that will be presented to the class at the end of the term. A key purpose of the group projects is to provide students with a comprehensive experience by  exploring specific management topics and to develop implications based on your findings.
Second, this exercise is designed to provide students with an opportunity to practice their presentation skills. Thus, all projects should be presented using appropriate media such as PowerPoint, video, overhead displays, etc. A positive component for these assignments is demonstration of creativity. Non-standardized presentation techniques such as role playing, skits or demonstrations are good  ways to meet these creativity requirements. A separate handout is provided for
  this project.
Each student assigned to a team is expected to perform and contribute equally throughout the paper and presentation. Team members will be asked to evaluate the contribution of each individual on their team. If a team member has not contributed as much or at all, their final grade will be adjusted accordingly. If a team member does not participate in the final presentation, they will not receive credit for this portion of the project.
Group Project Attendance Policies: 
Group Presentations will be held from April 30th thru May 31st. 

Exams will consist of multiple choice, true false questions and short answer questions. Students should bring a number two pencil. Punctuality is critical  on exam days. Arriving late hinders a student’s ability to perform to their full capabilities and is considered disruptive to the class. If a student arrives late, he or she may be asked to take the comprehensive final as an alternative. Absolutely NO make-up exams will be given! NO EXCEPTIONS! If you miss one exam, you will need to take the comprehensive final to replace the  exam. If you miss two exams, you will receive a score of zero for the missed exam.
Academic Dishonesty: 
Scholastic dishonesty includes but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, collusion, the submission for credit of any work or materials that are attributable in whole or part to another person, taking an examination for another person, any act designed to give unfair advantage to a student or the attempt to commit such acts. Because scholastic dishonesty harms the individual, all students, and the integrity of AIA, policies on scholastic dishonesty will be strictly enforced.

 Copying Textbooks: 
It is a violation of copyright laws to copy any portion of the textbook. Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken. 

Performance Evaluation: 
Your performance in this course will be evaluated in the following areas: (1) Two exams; (2) Two quizzes; (3) One cumulative final exam (optional); (4) Topic assignments throughout the term; (5) In class assignments; (6) Team project;
  (7) Reading of the assigned chapters before class to fully participate in class discussion.  

Grading Policies: 
Evaluation of your performance will be accomplished through several different means. This will permit you the opportunity to learn and be measured in a manner that is consistent with your particular learning style. Grades received on exams, assignments, etc. reflect your ability to communicate your knowledge within the class. Each person possesses the power to communicate this knowledge at the level of their choosing. The graded components of this course will 
consist of the following:

 1. Comprehensive Exams (2@100 each)  200 or 20%
 2.  Quizzes (2 @ 50 each) 100 or 10%
 3.  Optional Comprehensive Final 100 or 10% (Replace one exam)
 4.  Class Assignments 150 or 15%
 5.  Class Participation 150 or 15%
 6.  Group Paper 200 or 20%
 7.   Group Presentation 200 or 20%

 TOTAL 1000 or 100%
